How to chose the right painting contractors.
One of the most important rules in contracting with someone for any type of home remodeling is: do your research on the company, prior to letting the person on your property to give you an estimate. One of the first places to check for a negative feedback about the painting company, is a local website of a better business bureau. They usually display all complaints about the company for the past three years. It is impossible to make 100 percent of you customers happy (although it should be the goal) and even the painting companies providing excellent service may have a couple of complaints. What matters is size of the company and number of complaints. In the painting company employs 30 painters and completes dozens of projects every week, a couple of complaints in the three year period would not indicate poor workmanship. If it is a two man operation and they have more than one complaint in the past three years, that is an indicator of a contractor to stay away from. The web reviews of the painters can be helpful. It should give you the date when the review is written. From it you can see how long the painting company has been in the business. Asking for a few references can sometimes help. It is clear that the painting contractor will give the potential customer only the references of the people who were happy with his work. And there may be hundreds of other customers that were not so happy. But if a painter can’t produce any references at all, it may be because he is new to the painting business and has painted very few houses. One of the best ways to find a competent person to paint your house is to ask your neighbors for a reference. Most of the people are average at what they do, and it is very difficult to find a person with exceptional skills in any trade or profession. That is why when someone get an exceptional service, he will always keep the phone number of a place or person, who provided the service and will be happy to tell about positive experience to others. It is always better to ask for a reference a neighbor who had his house painted at least three or four years ago. This way you will have an idea of how your house will look a few years after the painters left your property. The house may look very pretty the first year or two, but if the painting contractor was trying to save money on paint and purchased the least expensive grade , or just watered down the premium paint, the paint job will not last very long. In the best case scenario the low quality paint will fade on the sun. In the worst case, the watered down paint will start pealing off in just a year or two and the homeowner will have to send money not only to repaint the house, but to remove all pealing paint prior to painting as well. It is important to have a written contract, when giving your business to a painting company. Doesn’t matter how confident you feel after talking to a painter or a sales person representing the company, getting someone to repaint your house is a business transaction and should be treated as such.
